If you are in search of a party, you won’t find it at Ahau Tulum. This is an upscale beach club with a very specific focus on arts and crafts alongside wellness and creativity.
The vibe is very relaxed, and there’s not a huge amount of social interaction outside of the activities taking place. So, if you want to make friends, you’ll need to put in a bit of effort.
It’s very pleasant though, and we enjoyed being able to switch off for a day here.
Location And Accessibility
Tulum is very conveniently located for those flying from the USA, Central America and South America (though flights from these locations can be quite long) but less so for Europeans, Asians and Africans.
Ahau Tulum, along with all of Tulum’s beach clubs, is quite far from the town, and you’ll need to drive or arrange transportation unless you’re staying in the on-site hotel.
Aesthetic And Design
The beach club is strikingly attractive, and they’ve made a real effort to ensure that it has a unique look, not least because of the giant sculpture.
If you want that beach hut feel without compromising on luxury, then you’re going to be very pleased with what you find at Ahau Tulum.
There’s a lot of jungle-inspired art and design in the architecture, and it’s a very “Gram-worthy” spot.
Staff Friendliness and Professionalism (Service Standard)
We found the staff to be among the most friendly and professional in the whole of Tulum; they really went out of their way to make us feel welcome and wanted.
Our team was very impressed with their knowledge of the menu items and also of the area as a whole, and they enjoyed interacting with the staff on every occasion.
Ahau Tulum has worked hard to ensure it distinguishes itself in the most important category for running a beach club.
Service Speed and Efficiency
We were also impressed by the speed and efficiency of the service, though there was a single exception to that rule when the drinks were delayed longer than they should have been; though the staff were apologetic for it.
Overall, you can expect them to anticipate when you need to order and for the order to be swiftly executed and then brought out to you.
Food Quality and Variety
There are two restaurants on-site, an off-shoot of Raw Love Cafe serving up plant-based treats and the Ahau Restaurant which serves both international and local cuisine all day long.
Between the two, we felt that the food was plenty varied and of reasonable quality. We enjoyed everything we ate at Ahau Tulum, but none of it was quite in the fine dining league.
Beverage Selection and Creativity
The drink selection is great, and if you’re not into alcohol, the Raw Love Cafe adds an absolute host of non-alcoholic options with awesome fresh blended smoothies and juices.
However, in keeping with most beach clubs in Tulum, the prices are quite high, and while the beers may be local and artisanal, you can get better value elsewhere in the area.
Cleanliness and Hygiene
There is a problem that all beach clubs in Tulum face, for about 6 months of the year – sargassum season. This is when the Sargasso seaweed washes ashore and coats every beach.
If it’s not moved quickly, it starts to stink, and it’s deeply unpleasant. Fortunately, the staff at Ahau Tulum are on top form, and they don’t allow seaweed to build up near the beach club.
The rest of the beach club and, indeed, the wider resort is kept very clean too, and we were impressed with their standards.
Comfort of Seating and Lounging Areas
If you arrive early, you can take advantage of the daybeds, but they don’t put the umbrellas out here until the official 10 a.m. starting time.
Otherwise, the beach beds and loungers are spacious, clean and very nicely positioned with a good view out over the ocean.
Music and Entertainment
There is a curated playlist here, and it’s clear that they’re trying to develop their own vibe, but it’s really very much a backdrop to conversation rather than something to dance to.
They do have occasional live performances which can be very entertaining but there’s nothing in the way of organised entertainment for the most part.
Seasonality
Tulum is in the tropics, which means there’s (theoretically) never a bad time to visit and the beach club is open year-round to accommodate that.
But, while Ahau Tulum deals with the seaweed very well, many other places in Tulum do not, and you might want to bear that in mind before you book your flights.
Pricing and Value for Money
We felt that Ahau Tulum was competitively priced for Tulum without being any kind of bargain. Sure, it’s expensive when compared to a traditional beach bar, but that’s the hidden cost of comfortable seats, highly trained staff, swimming pool access, etc.
And we think it’s a price worth paying, and of course, it’s still much cheaper than it is to spend a day at a beach club in Miami, though not as good value for money as Bali.
Beach Access and Quality
This beach club provides beach access, which is good because foreigners often have to pay $22 to walk on the beach in Tulum thanks to a local government regulation.
The beach is lovely, and the strip around this beach club is kept clean and pleasant by the staff; however, if you walk very far in either direction, you’re going to run into seaweed during that season, and there’s not much you can do about it.
Sustainability Practices
They’re not playing games when it comes to sustainability at Ahau Tulum, and they hold a Green Key Certification for their efforts in eco-care, waste separation and preservation projects.
They offer plant-based dining, mindful activities and the architecture and design of the beach club and resort use renewable materials and traditional insulation techniques that avoid plastics and fibreglass.
Exclusive Perks for Guests
You get a towel and a daybed included with a minimum spend, and that’s about it. To be fair, this is the industry standard, and you can’t complain too much about it.
However, we feel like most beach clubs are missing a trick here and they could be offering bigger, more valuable packages to their guests, improving their own profits and the guest experience in tandem. People are on holiday and don’t mind splurging out, after all.
Safety and Security
There’s a 24-hour security presence on the site, and access to Ahau Tulum is only via a controlled gate access point.
However, there’s no getting around the fact that this is Tulum and crime can come knocking in even the most secure places at times. We doubt that you’ll have any trouble at this beach club, but we can’t guarantee it.
Event Hosting Capabilities
There is an excellent on-site private events team which can help cater to weddings, receptions, wellness gatherings, etc.
However, there’s a hard cap of 80 guests for dinners, and the venue is not huge, so don’t expect to hold a 1,000-person corporate event here either.
Consistency of Experience
We felt that based on repeat visits and feedback from other guests, online reviews, etc., Ahau Tulum delivers a consistently good experience and that you are unlikely to be disappointed by a visit here.
Additional Amenities and Facilities
We felt that this place was very well appointed if you want wellness, watersports, or exercise spaces and also for arts and crafts.
However, you’re quite a way out of town, so if they haven’t got something you need, you’re going to have to travel to find it.

Overall, we think Ahau Tulum is an excellent experience if you want a beach club where you can enjoy some relaxation by the sea with plenty of things to do.
No, it’s not a party spot, but that’s fine, sometimes you just need somewhere to chill and Ahau Tulum quite fits the bill for that.
